Charles Otto Puth, Jr., also known as Charlie Puth, is an American singer, record producer, and song writer. He was born on December 2, 1991 in Rumson, New Jersey. His musical career started in 2009 and he is currently one of the top pop, pop rock, and R&B music artists. His parents are Debra (a music teacher) and Charles Puth, Sr. (a real estate agent and builder). Charlie has two younger siblings, who are twins. When he was only 2 years old, Charlie experienced a nearly fatal dog bite. This resulted in permanent scarring on his right eyebrow.
Charlie was introduced to classical music at the age of 4 through his mother who worked as a music teacher. By the age of 10, he was enrolled in a jazz music class. He also participated in Count Basie Theatre’s Cool School in his native New Jersey when he was 12. Eventually, this was his stepping stone to be selected for a Charlie Brown production. By the time he was in sixth grade, Charlie recorded and produced his own version of a Christmas album. He called his album Have Yourself a Merry Charlie Christmas. The album generated a total of $600 in sales.
From seventh grade through to his senior year in high school, Charlie went to Manhattan School of Music Pre-College. His major was in jazz piano and his minor studies were in classical music. For his college degree, he studied music production and engineering at Berklee College of Music. He completed his studies in 2013.
Charlie Puth’s international success came after he created his own YouTube channel in 2009. His channel was called Charlies Vlogs wherein he uploaded acoustic cover videos. He quickly became a viral success and even won a competition by Perez Hilton called “Can You Sing?”. In this competition, he performed a version of Adele’s “Someone Like You” with Emily Luther. Within that same year, Charlie Puth had signed to Ellen Degeneres’ label, eleveneleven. Degeneres later said that his performance of Adele’s song is what captured her attention. In 2012, he left the label.
Charlie Puth is best known for writing and producing songs for various musical artists as well as YouTube personalities. His collaboration with Wiz Khalifa on the song “See You Again”, which was used as the theme song for the movie “Fast & Furious 7” was his biggest hit to date. It stayed at the #1 spot on the U.S. Hot Billboard 100 charts for 12 non-consecutive weeks. It was also nominated for 3 Grammy Awards. This prompted more international releases including a duet with Meghan Trainor for the song “Marvin Gaye”. The song hit number one on various music charts in the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. It also reached #21 on the U.S. Hot Billboard 100 chart.
