Alyx Ander Interview

By Witemeyer @Hazengirl

Alyx Ander is a hot new artist whose single “Memories of You” is lighting up the EDM airwaves. I predict this Miami-based DJ will soon be booking gigs coast to coast (maybe even EDC Vegas 2018!), so I reached out to request an interview before he’s so busy he won’t have the time. Not only did he accommodate: he proved to be a super friendly and slightly goofy guy who sent me a waving Baby Groot and didn’t bat an eye when I replied with a Star Lord dance-off clip. I’m always impressed when great talents like Alyx are also down-to-earth people, happy to connect with fans. Make sure to follow him on Twitter @iamalyxander and download Memories of You!

Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

One of my greatest musical influences is my father, who was my first music teacher. He plays seven instruments and has always been a huge influence in my life. Daft Punk…I know I know…but they really are amazing! Their work is incredibly complex and simple at the same time, which is beautiful. I also think people would be surprised to know that I grew up listening to hip-hop and I found inspiration/still am inspired by artists like The Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, and A Tribe Called Quest

How would you describe your style to someone whose never heard your music?

A sprinkle of spice, a dash of excitement, a few shavings of vocoder, some chopped vocals…shake it, don’t stir it…pour over ice…and voila!

Which new artists and songs are you listening to right now?

I’ve been jamming out to:

• Offaiah – Trouble (It’s not new anymore, but I’ve been a huge fan of the track since it came out and still listen to it regularly)

• John K – Runnin (an amazing AMAZING talent who I was connected to and had the chance to kick it with.) Super great guy…and we’re currently collaborating on some new fun music 🙂

• Alexander Orue – Robbie Rivera Not a Single Word (Alexander Orue Remix) – Such a great talent from Miami, he recently completed this remix for Robbie; a gorgeous rendition of the track with a great chord progression throughout.

• MusicMike512 – EVERYTHING!!! LOL…he’s a great pianist I found on Youtube searching for different renditions of Sadness & Sorrow by Toshio Masuda…one of the main themes from Naruto…yep a fan of Anime!

What’s your favorite part of being a DJ/producer?

The best thing about DJ’ing is taking people on a journey through your song selection. It’s so cool seeing reactions when you play someone’s favorite song, a classic they hadn’t heard in years, or introduce them to something new and fresh.  As a producer, one of the greatest feelings I’ve gotten is hearing a melody or chord progression, recreating it, and then having it evolve into a full track.

What’s it been like hearing your music on national radio stations like Sirius BPM?

OUTRAGEOUS!!! Whenever I catch Memories of You on BPM I become so giddy and excited…it’s probably a good thing I’m in an Uber or Lyft most of the time! One of the coolest things is having new and old friends reach out with snaps, pictures and videos of when I’m being played on the radio and how excited they are to hear me…it’s like living a dream.

What’s next for you? A tour? An album? A collaboration?

I’m starting to play out more and more, specifically with Daybreaker, which is a wake up and dance party. Last month, I played at Space Ibiza in New York and they had over 750 people in attendance at 7am dancing before heading to work which was unbelievable. I’m playing with them in Miami at Heart June 6th and then in Nashville June 9th. No album plans yet just because if I’m going to do an album, I want it to really be special…and I haven’t had that “eureka ” moment just yet.

Who’s your favorite superhero and why?

Obviously Britney Spears! I’ve always been a huge fan of Green Lantern, because of the rings’ ability to create anything one can imagine which  reminds me being a producer…being able to create anything musically that’s in your head.

What else should your fans know about you?

I’m a big NYC sports fan; Mets, Jets, and Knicks, which some people would see as being a glutton for punishment, but I see it as being overly loyal. A big fan of Harry Potter (just got back from Harry Potter world which was AMAZING!!) and The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I adopted my dog Maui (a lab mix) 12 years ago, and she still acts like a puppy…and I LOVE pizza!!

Will you give me a shoutout when you’re headlining festivals and Tiesto and Armin are opening up for you?

Obviously! You’ll be on stage with me!!
