Beyoncé’s Surprise New Single “Formation” Roots for Racial Equality
Remember the incredibly powerful and beautiful artist, Beyoncé? The Signer/songwriter has been dabbling in the world of fashion for a while now, which might be why her last single has been back in November 2014 with the release of the Beyoncé: Platinum Edition album. Ladies and gentlemen, the wait is over as we have gotten ourselves quite the surprise drop of a musical bomb with her new song on February 6, the video going viral immediately after its reveal, shooting to number 1 on the Billboard + Twitter 140 chart, just a day before she takes to the stage during the Super Bowl 50 halftime show, where she was to perform with Coldplay and Bruno Mars. It was wholly unexpected and has gotten a few people riled up about the fact since it is the second release within a matter of weeks, the first being a track from A Head Full of Dreams called “Hymn for the Weekend”.
“Formation” is an interesting song to say the least, which some aspects of the video and part of the chorus reminding us of the days of slavery, while others allude to anti-police protests and the hurricane Katrina devastation. Now, the words also include such lines as “I got hot sauce in my bag” while the music in and of itself can be counted as subpar in relation to some of her other creations, but we cannot dismiss the video clip especially, for it has some rather haunting scenes to show. There are critics, however, who cannot stop raving about the fierce and funky performance, especially due to the messages relating to race, identity and the black culture. It seems to be a rather incredible representation of the hashtags #BlackGirlMagic, #BlackLivesMatter and #BlackPride. With a cameo from Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy, we can say that it was pretty damned epic. Between southern gothic funerals, ‘80’s style dance routines, police cruisers submerged in flooded streets, crawfish and 19th century mansions, it was quite the show Beyoncé put on.
Of course, we all want to listen to what the lovely Beyoncé Knowles has to say after coming back to the music scene over a year past her last big hit. This is where streaming and downloading from Tidal (co-owned by her husband, Jay-Z) becomes the right thing to do as it is currently available for free on the web page. As for those who enjoy merchandise, you will be pretty happy to note that one of our favorite artists has updated her online store to include a whole line specifically dedicated to the most quotable lines from her new single.
