Dan + Shay Where It All Began Tour Review
By Lesa Browning
Hot Country rockin’ duo Dan + Shay brought their wildly popular modern country rock sound to the Spokane Knitting Factory on Friday night. Playing to a sold out crowd of SUPER happy fans of all ages, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney took us back to “where it all began” literally. Signing with Warner records in 2013, shortly after meeting, these young guys have skyrocketed to Country music stardom with hits like “19 You + Me” and “Show You Off.” They played the 2014 CMA Music Festival in Nashville, where is was super easy to get tickets to see these hotties. This year, I am pretty sure they will be a much tougher ticket to come by.
After touring with Hunter Hays and Blake Shelton, Dan + Shay took off on their first headlining tour Where It All Began.
Opening for Dan + Shay was Canaan Smith.
Smith did an amazing job and was a ton of fun! Among other things, he sang his latest popular single “Love You Like That” and had a great time with a shortened cover of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” that drove the audience wild. Smith did some meet & greet time in the lobby after the show, signing items but asking to not do formal photos. That was a little odd and actually slowed down the line as fans were not sure what to do. We have a few wonky photos taken by the gals behind us who we unsure how to deal with the random chit chat and hugs we were exchanging as we decided to play by the rules and not pose for a “real” photo. Not that he is asking my advice, but I would suggest he do what most openers do and have someone help control the timing of his fan line and snap quick photos with a fan’s phone and keep the line moving. (like everyone else does… just sayin’) Overall, he was really great and absolutely on our #bestopeningacts list for this year. He even wore a Gonzaga tee shirt as this was the night our local College basketball team beat UCLA to make it to the “Elite Eight!”
We really hope to see him on one of the smaller stages in Nashville this summer. Go Canaan Smith!
Dan + Shay came out loud and proud to be on the stage. Touring to promote their first album, Where It All Began, released on April 1, 2014, they played all their hits and then some including “19 You + Me” and “Show You Off.” (yes, the young ladies went insane) They also did a really great cover of Ed Sheeran’s hit “Evergreen” while the audience sang along. Actually the audience sang along quite a bit this night. I think the fact that the album has been out for nearly a year means that fans just know the words, love the music and are happy to have an opportunity to belt it out in a place where no one can know if they have any talent or not : )
I met Dan and Shay a couple of times last summer and will say they are some of the nicest guys in the industry I have had the pleasure of meeting. They are very down to earth and serious rock stars when they take the stage. Talented, great stage presence and the audience loves them. If you have an opportunity to take in one of the shows on the Where It All Began Tour, you won’t be disappointed. Check out the links below for more information. (but do it quick, shows are selling out fast!)
