Foster the People is a rock band based in Los Angeles, California. The band was formed in 2009 and consists of four members – namely Mark Foster (lead vocals), Sean Cimino (lead guitar), Mark Pontius (drums), and Isom Innis (keyboard). Mark Foster, the group’s lead vocalist, founded the band in 2009 after he struggled in his quest to become a musician in LA. Prior to pursuing his musical career, Foster had a job writing commercial jingles.

Before moving to LA, Foster was known for his musical talents. While he was still attending Nordonia High School in Cleveland, he was recognized as a gifted student. He was also part of the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s chorus. Since the age of 5, he looked up to The Beach Boys as his musical inspiration.

With his father’s encouragement, Foster moved to LA in order to pursue a musical career. He worked various night jobs, and also attended parties in Hollywood in order to build a social and professional network. But his quest to build a music career was halted at the age of 19 when he dealt with drug addiction.

He tried to form a band for a few years, but didn’t have any success. He worked as a waiter for several years in LA until he landed a job for Morphonics writing commercial jingles in 2008. According to Foster, this job opened his eyes about the marketing standpoint of making music. He credited this job with reviving his confidence about his own ability to make music and to perform.

Foster eventually met up with Mark Pontius, who is the current drummer for Foster the People. When Pontius saw the songs that Foster had written over the years, he was impressed by the quality and diversity of the songs. The two decided to form a band that was initially called “Foster & The People”. They also brought in a long-time friend of Foster, bassist Cubbie Fink. The group began to notice that people would often mistake the band’s name to be ‘Foster the People’. And so, the band decided to stick with this name.

The band gained international stardom in 2010 following the release of their single “Pumped Up Kicks”. They landed a record deal with Startime International shortly after the song became a viral sensation. Since then, Foster the People has established a strong fan base worldwide.

Their debut album Torches was released in May 2011. Their song “Pumped Up Kicks” continued its fame and peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Two other singles were also released from the album: “Helena Beat” and “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)”. In 2011, they also received three Grammy Award nominations for both their single “Pumped Up Kicks” and the album Torches. In 2014, they released their sophomore album, Supermodel, and in 2017 they released Sacred Hearts Club.
