In 2001, the band changed its name to Maroon 5 and they brought in James Valentine. James played guitar but he switched to keyboards when he joined the band. They signed with Octone Records, which is a subsidiary of J Records. In June 2002, their debut album Songs About Jane was released. The first single off the album was “Harder to Breathe”. It garnered a lot of airplay which helped it reach number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 200 charts. Two years after its release, the album reached platinum status earning the band the Best New Artist award at the 2005 Grammy Awards.

Maroon 5 toured worldwide in support of Songs About Jane. They also produced two live recordings during this span of time. In 2006, however, the band’s drummer Ryan Dusick had to leave the band due to an injury of his wrist and shoulder. It was then that Matt Flynn replaced him as the band’s drummer.

In 2007, they released their second studio album, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. The album reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. The band’s first single off the album was “Makes Me Wonder”. Like the album, this single also reached number one on the Billboard charts.

In 2010, Maroon 5 released their third studio album called Hands All Over. This album was re-released in 2011 to include the single that they did in collaboration with Christina Aguilera, “Moves Like Jagger”. This single reached number one on Billboard charts. In 2012, their fourth studio album, Overexposed, dropped. All four singles off this album were huge successes. In fact, their single “One More Night” stayed 9 weeks at the top of the Billboard singles chart.

During this time, PJ Morton joined the group and later Sam Farrar did as well. The latter is a former member of the band Phantom Planet. As of today, Maroon 5 has sold 48 million singles and 20 million records worldwide.
