Mat Kearney Just Kids Tour
By: Lesa Browning
Singer Songwriter Mat Kearney kicked off his Just Kids Tour in Spokane, Washington on Thursday night. Kearney is touring to promote the release of his fourth album titled appropriately, Just Kids. Opening acts in Support of Kearney are Parachute and Judah & The Lion.
Tonight was like a special 2 for 1 deal at my favorite store. My local venue had one of my long time favorite bands opening for another of my Favs. Parachute opening for Mat Kearney? What? Yes Please! Throw in some Judah & The Lion to satisfy my constant need for new up and coming bands and this could be the perfect night of music fun! With good friends, a great bartender and staff at the Knitting Factory, that is exactly how the night progressed.
The show started at 8:00 pm and the venue was packed. These bands are popular in this town, always drawing a crowd. Judah & The Lion took the stage and wasted no time getting the crowd fired up. This relatively young, Nashville based band has just released their second EP titled Kids These Days. The large number of college kids in the audience went nuts for these guys who have a very folk rock feel with songs that are super fun to dance to.
Next up we had Parachute. I am a big fan of this band, I have seen them a lot, never miss a chance to dance along to their music if they are in a city I happen to be in. This night would not be a disappointment. The band has made a few changes over the last year and they have not missed a beat. They sounded great and the crowd loved every second. They promised new music coming soon, again, the crowd went wild. Will Anderson met fans in the lobby for photos and stayed for the very long line. (yep, I joined in and introduced my friend Jenny to Will, it was lots of fun)
Finally we had the “main event” and Mat Kearney took the stage. Kearney is a performer who seems to feed off his audience from the minute he steps on to the stage, tonight would be a perfect example of just that. He sang songs from the new album, but also many of the old favorites from albums past that had everyone singing along. “Undeniable” and “Nothing Left to Lose” were huge crowd favorites. Kearney talked to the crowd like he was a local, and growing up not far away in Oregon, we sort of felt like he almost was one of us. He bantered with the audience, took selfies and literally got into the crowd singing and swimming upstream through the many surprised and happy fans who I think were just shocked that he was brave enough to trudge all the way into the center of the GA crowd! At one point in the show he brought out his opening band, Judah & The Lion and they did a cover of “Uptown Funk” that was just crazy fun. The high energy and interaction between Mat Kearney and his band is really something special. The talent is phenomenal and they provide nothing but top notch entertainment.
I love the new album, I loved the entire line up of the evening. It really was a great night of music!
