Having been a Meiko (pronounced “Mee-ko”) fan ever since I first listened to “Piano Song” on the radio from her self-titled debut album in 2008, it is refreshing to watch an artist over the years stay true to her roots:  making art for art’s sake.  Meiko’s style of songwriting and melody making is always straightforward, quirky, and a charismatic blend of soft innocence and bold lyrics.  Her latest EP Lovers & Fighters is a peachier blend of alternative pop and folk-rock served up proper from this Georgian native.  “Raincoat Song” is a standout with her signature spunky lyrics:

Cuz I thought you were my Ricardo

I thought I was your Lucy

We were gonna have a family

Go to soccer games and all that shit.”

“Raincoat Song” along with “Oh My Soul”  from Lovers & Fighters echoed some of the sass and sensuality of her 2012 chart-topping album to date, The Bright Side, which was #4 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers.  I recently watched her play live from her living room on StageIt.com where she announced an upcoming East Coast fall tour later this year with Tonic lead singer Emerson Hart (http://emersonhart.com/).  Her third song in was “Hold On” – a special treat as it is yet to be released, has an uplifting message and melody, and it was accompanied by a neighboring apartment’s barking dog, so I like to think it was truly an original performance never to be heard in quite the same way again. 😉  During her one-hour show, she sang songs requested by live viewers and others she self-selected, many from her 2008 debut album including the secret track “You and Onions” (recorded solely on her 2007 independently released debut album, but if you email her, she’ll send it to you), “Hawaii” and “Under My Bed.”  In between songs, she happily answered viewer’s questions ranging from her betrothed to her favorite beer.  Some fun factoids shared during her show:

  • Stage name comes from her and her sister, Kelly Nishimoto, a self-taught fashion designer.  Growing up together in Roberta, Georgia with an Irish musician for a dad and a Japanese jewelry designer for a mom, they were proud of their unique 1/4 Japanese heritage and came up with childhood nicknames “Meiko” (bud) and “Keiko” (blessed).
  • Favorite beer on the cheap is Bud Light and Allagash White Ale for special occasions
  • Latest favorite singer: Tove Lo
  • Leftover from a fundraiser campaign and in an effort to combat the heat, she used an adorable pink dinosaur baby-sized Meiko t-shirt to wipe her beads of sweat throughout the show (her LA apartment has no air conditioning and doesn’t allow for dogs even though she really wants one).final MMD Meiko screen shot 1 final MMD Meiko StageIt

All of this just adds yet one more reason to adore Meiko and her music – sweaty songs, sweet melodies, great sense of humor, and a genuine artist who writes and sings straight from the heart.
