Meiko Plays For Seattle’s Secret Shows

By Lesa Browning

The College Club on Seattle’s waterfront was the setting Wednesday night for one of Seattle’s Secret Shows, an intimate listening room environment and just a really cool way to experience great music.  Scattered all over the city, locations are largely unknown until just before the event.  At The College Club, there was a cash bar and light snacks provided.  The audience was invited to bring snacks to share and many did.  This particular evening was being broadcast live for the Melodic Caring Project, an organization that live streams concerts to children and teens receiving hospital care. Tonight was dedicated to Marcus and Ashley.

The opening act was a fabulous folk/rock artist James Coates.  Hailing from the small town of Sumner, WA, Coates got the room warmed up immediately with his huge personality that was both humble and hilarious. Playing his acoustic guitar,  Coates sings soulful songs that tell emotional stories that are easily relatable and showcase his voice that is somehow a mix of both gravel and velvet. With so much power and talent, James Coates is one to watch for sure!

Our headliner tonight was the amazing Indie singer/songwriter Meiko.  Hailing originally from Georgia, Meiko now resides in Los Angeles. This shy pop/folk artist come out with her guitar and gave a sweet little shout out to Marcus and Ashley before telling us a little bit about herself.  Meiko’s first album was self released and all of the tracts have made their way into television shows. Her sophomore album Bright Side was released in 2012.

With a raspy whisper and only the slightest hint of a southern accent, Meiko took us on a journey of personal songs about love and relationships. Boys With Girlfriends, Sweeter, Under My Bed and Reasons to Love You were crowd favorites. Full of personality, this quirky singer/songwriter will warm your heart.
