Post Malone is a singer, rapper, and songwriter. He is also a record producer and guitarist. Born Austin Richard Post in 1995 in Syracuse, New York, he rose to fame with his debut track “White Iverson”. This single helped him get a recording contract with Republic Records in August 2015, which was also the same month he released the single.
Before he rose to international fame, Post Malone worked as a disc jockey. This career exposed him to various musical genres like hip hop, rock, and country music. In 2010 he auditioned for the band Crown the Empire. However, he was rejected when the strings on his guitar broke during his audition!
According to Post Malone, his love for playing the guitar can be attributed to playing the video game Guitar Hero while growing up. His first venture into the music industry was when he played for a heavy metal rock band. Before then, he had been using Audacity to create mix tapes. He made his first one at the age of 16, titled “Young and After Them Riches”.
He started gaining popularity in the music industry when he moved to LA. Joining together with a few other music producers, he formed a group called BLCKVRD. While in LA, he met 1st Down of FKi and Rex Kudo. These two were among those who helped produce the tracks for his debut album and specifically his first single, “White Iverson”. Post wrote the song himself and then recorded it two days later.
When the single was released in 2015, it received praise from other music artists including Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller. Post uploaded the single to his SoundCloud account in February 2015 and released a music video for it in July 2015. It only took one month for the video to reach 1 million views. The attention that the video and single generated got music labels very interested in him.
Since his initial success, Post Malone has worked with a few other notable artists such as Kanye West, 50 Cent, and Young Thug. It was through his performance at Kylie Jenner’s 18th birthday party that he met Kanye West. After Kanye West, Post also met with and became friends with Canadian singer Justin Bieber.
Even though the stage name Post Malone was officially used after he gained international fame in 2015, he cited that he had actually thought of this name way back when he was 14 or 15. There are many theories as to how he chose the name. Many speculate that it was chosen in reference to the professional basketball player Karl Malone. However, Post notes that he took it from his family name and used a rap name generator for “Malone”!
