Sam Smith (full name Samuel Frederick Smith) is an English singer and songwriter who was was born on May 19, 1992 in London, England. His musical career has resulted in various hit songs in the soul, pop, and R&B genres.
Sam Smith gained fame in October 2012 as a vocalist on Disclosure’s hit single “Latch”. This song reached number eleven on the UK Singles chart. In May 2013, he was once again featured in popular song — this time “La La La” by Naughty Boy. This was his first number one single. He continued his rise to fame when he earned a nomination at the Brit Critics’ Choice Award in 2014. He won the award along as well as the Sound of 2014 poll by the BBC.
The release of his debut studio album, In the Lonely Hour, finally came in May 2014 after he signed a record deal with Capitol Records UK. The first single off the album was “Lay Me Down”. His next single called “Money on My Mind” reached number one on the UK Singles Charts.
However, his biggest break in terms of international success was with his hit single “Stay With Me”. It peaked at number one in the UK. Meanwhile, the song reached as high as number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The fourth single off of the album, “I’m Not the Only One”, landed at number five in the UK and U.S.
He made his U.S. debut performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. After that, he was also invited to perform on Saturday Night Live. In late 2014, he received 6 Grammy nominations. He ended up with four Grammys in February 2015 for the following categories: Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Stay with Me. Aside from winning Grammy awards, he also received trophies from the 2015 Billboard Music Awards and 2015 Brit Awards.
